Photo Dynamic Therapy is the application of a product called 5-Aminolevulonic Acid 20% (5-ALA) is a photosensitiser which produces a form of oxygen that makes cells more receptive to light and kills nearby cells when exposed to a specific wavelength of light.

Each photosensitiser is activated by a specific wavelength of light.  This wavelength determines how far the light can travel into the body.  Photodynamic Therapy is a term which describes the application of a photosensitising chemical to a specific cutaneous lesion which, when followed by exposure to visible light, results in an excitation of the photosensitiser.

Once this photosensitiser is irradiated and activated by an appropriate light source, reactive oxygen species are produced affecting subcellar structures, which leads to cytotoxicity.  Due to this phototoxic effect, malignant and non-malignant hyperproliferative tissue can be destroyed or decreased in size, and eventually be eradicated.

There are currently many practitioners world-wide that encourage the use of PDT and it is used as an annual preventative measure to treat and inhibit further sun damage.

Range of conditions for ALA treatment include – Non-Hyperkeratotic Actinic keratoses, Seborrheic keratoses, Cystic acne, acne vulgaris and oily skin, Rosacea, and much more.

Photosensitivity

After the treatment, you will be sensitive to light for a period of approximately 24 – 48 hours.  REMEMBER –  The more reaction you have with the treatment – we say – this is not a Side effect – this is an EFFECT and is a vital part of the treatment and is necessary for the regeneration of new, healthy skin on the treated area. If you experience greater scabbing or reaction than expected, that means that you had more sun-damage and it is being corrected.

THERE ARE NO LONG-TERM SIDE-EFFECTS REPORTED WITH THE USE OF PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY – PDT.
